Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for new Parents/Carers

 Welcome to Rhu Primary School. We hope that this list of FAQ’s will help you settle into school life more quickly, especially if you arrive outwith the start of the school year. Chances are that you will have more questions than we answer here. Uniform

GIRLS

  • black or grey, skirt/tunic/trousers
  • white blouse/yellow polo shirt (with/or without school logo)
  • black or grey cardigan/school sweatshirt (black with school logo)
  • black shoes (for younger children, please ensure that if worn, they can tie their own laces)

BOYS

  • black or grey, shorts/trousers
  • white shirt/yellow polo shirt (with/or without school logo)
  • black or grey, sweater/school sweatshirt (black with logo)
  • black shoes (for younger children, please ensure that if worn, they can tie their own laces)

The above items are all available locally from ASDA, M&S etc. Items with the school logo are available to order on line at www.schoolwearmadeasy.com

ALL

School tie (black and gold) are available from the school office priced at £6.00.

School ties may be worn with the white shirt/blouse at any time and are particularly encouraged on special occasions when representing the school, e.g. church services, class trips, photos etc.)

PE KIT

School PE kit of black shorts and yellow school logo t-shirt (with PE bag) is optional, and available for purchase via the website above, otherwise children may wear any colour combination of shorts and t-shirt with black soft soled gym shoes (no football colours) PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS OF UNIFORM!

The School Day

School hours are 09:00 – 15:00. Children should not arrive before 08:45 as there is no adult supervision before this time.

From 0845 pupils may enter the school grounds via the Church yard Gate or the Kitchen Gate. P1, 2, 3 & 7 go straight to their classrooms where they will be supervised by a member of staff before school starts at 0900. Pupils in P4, 5 & 6 gather in the school hall, where they can wait with their friends until they line up at 0900 ready to be escorted to their classroom by their teacher.

At home time pupils are dismissed as follows:

P1 – Pupils are handed over to their parents in the playground

P2 – Pupils leave through the Church Gate and walk down with their teacher to the bottom gate where they are handed over to their parents/carers

P3 & 4 – Pupils leave via the allotment gate where they are handed over to their parents/carers by their teacher.

P5&6 – Pupils leave through the Kitchen Gate

P7 – Pupils leave through the main playground gate

Pupils who travel to school on scooter or bicycle will be dismissed through the main playground gate

If your child is going home with someone else other than you, the teacher MUST be informed in writing via Xpressions/email.

Lunches

School lunches are provided free for all children in P1 – P5. Pupils in P6 – P7 can purchase lunch at a cost of £2.30. An individual code can be obtained from the school office to allow you to make your online payments for any meals taken. The menu is changed weekly and can be seen on the front door of the school. Children may also bring packed lunches.

Children should bring their own named water bottles which they can fill from the water fountains throughout the school. Children are encouraged to take their water at break times however each teacher will have their own arrangements to make sure that if necessary children can access their water in class time.

Other

In an emergency, how do I get a message to my child? – If you have an urgent message for your child, please phone the school and the secretary will pass it on.

Is there a school bus? – Yes. Criteria for eligibility are set by the local council. Please ask the school secretary for an application form.

 When can I speak to the teacher? – Outwith formal report times, teachers are happy to arrange a time to speak to you. A suitable time can be arranged via the secretary or ask the teacher directly for a suitable time if you see her e.g. before class/after class  

School reps

The Rhu Primary School Association (RPSA) organises the class rep system, each class has at least one parent rep to help organise parents for school fundraising activities, events or trips etc. To find out more, please contact Mrs McGarry Chair of the RPSA at rpsarhu@gmail.com.

Parent Council

As a parent or carer of a child at Rhu you are automatically part of the Parent Forum. Run by parents, for parents, the Parent Council represents the views of the Parent Forum and works with the teaching staff to support the school, the parents and the pupils in all areas of school life. Jewellery

Sensible, discreet jewellery is permitted in school but must be removed before PE for safety reasons. Newly pierced ears must be taped with elastoplasts/micropore, at home, on day of PE or not worn to school on gym days.

School bags – Any school bag/lunch bag may be used. From P3 onwards, school bags should be able to accommodate an A4 folder.

Pencil Cases – From P1, children may bring in a small pencil case.
